STC SIDESTREAM FILTERS FOR COOLING TOWERS AND COOLING
SYSTEMS
The Problem
Cooling towers continually collect solid matter from airborne dust,
pollution, precipitated hardness salts and corrosion products. All this
material circulates through the system, combining with the biofilm and
fouling condensers, heat exchangers and the other process equipment reducing
operating efficiency and increasing maintenance and cleaning requirements.
Legionnaires Disease
Suspended solids circulating in the cooling water encourage bacteria
by providing protein for growth in addition to harbouring and protecting
biological activity. Sludge accumulations in low flow areas provide an
ideal breeding ground for bacteria such as Legionella Pneumophila.
The Solution
Using high performance cyclone separators the Waterwise STC range
of sidestream filters continually remove suspended solids down to less
than 20 micron in size from the cooling water and purge the cooling tower
sumps of any accumulated debris. The accumulated dirt is automatically
purged to drain without backwashing and with no interruption in the filtration
using the minimum amount of water.
Legionella Control
The Waterwise STC sidestream filtration systems combat the threat
of Legionella at source and allow the bio-control systems to work effectively,
by continuously removing the suspended solids from the cooling water and
purging the cooling tower pond of accumulated debris that harbour and
encourage bacteria.

located adjacent to the cooling tower and connected to the cooling tower
sump independent from the system pipework and connections.
